Scroll: On the Warm Knife of Loyalty
They do not come first with chains.
They come with belonging.
They do not say, Obey me.
They say, Stand with us.
They do not say, Lie.
They say, Be strategic.
And if you hesitate,
they do not strike you like an enemy—
they hold you like a friend
and press the blade in gently.
This is the warm knife of loyalty:
A smile that asks you to betray your own eyes.
A handshake that asks you to forget what you witnessed.
A room that offers you safety
in exchange for silence.
They will call it unity.
They will call it maturity.
They will call it patriotism.
But listen carefully:
When loyalty becomes a condition for truth,
truth becomes contraband.
And the first contraband they outlaw
is conscience.
So I am learning a new language.
Not the language of outrage,
which burns bright and dies fast.
The language of receipts.
The language of definitions.
The language of law that must answer to its own words.
I will not hate you into changing.
I will not scream you into sanity.
I will simply require the record.
And when they offer me warmth—
when they offer me “forgiveness” in exchange for surrender—
I will say, politely:
No.
Not because I am brave,
but because I know the cost of the small lie.
It begins as a favor.
It ends as a doctrine.
So let them call me difficult.
I have been called worse by gentler people.
My loyalty is not to a man,
or a party,
or a story that needs a villain to feel clean.
My loyalty is to what can be proven,
to what can be repaired,
to what can be loved without being used.
And if that makes me traitor
to the theater—
good.
I was never auditioning.
